Inspired by another thread discussing the value of Scientology's "TRs" (Training Routines)
where one seeks to acquire and hone their capability of "being there"
and other rudimentary communication skills.

Like all of Scientology's other "technology", teachings and tools, there is good and bad with TRs.
Perhaps the best way to understand how a "tool" can possibly be bad, it may be very helpful to first switch on two (2)
noise filters that effectively
mute Hubbard's deafening din of diabolically distractive declarations.
1. Sharing rhetorically linked DNA to Newton's Law of Motion, the Hubbard Law of Commotion states that: "For each of Scientology's policies, practices and pieces of "tech", there is an equal and opposite policy, practice and piece of tech." [ * ]
2. The Hubbard Law of Cosmic Concern & Cashological Consequence which states that: "All principles that have any degree of truth or workability within Scientology must immediately be elevated to preternaturally priceless position and pecuniary power." [ ** ]
TR's 0-IV, for example, could be reduced to their core values and simplicity and taught in a day or two of practice, to very excellent effect. If it were not for the two above Hubbard Laws, the "Communication Course" would actually be able to teach communication skills and avoid all of the other cultic cosmology and cost. Admittedly, the church TRIED on several occasions to create a secular version (e.g. "Success Through Communication Course") that didn't have to word-clear such arcane irrelevancies as "General Non-Remimeo" and "Operating Thetan" (i.e. "OT TR-O").
The trouble with training Scientology parishioners from the first day they enroll and start the Communication Course is that they have already had to sign extensive contracts and waivers and agree that they
ARE a parishioner in the
Church of Scientology. Thus, even before they begin to learn simple communication skills, Scientology has elevated the enrollment itself to levels of "cosmic concern".
If Scientology's founder and subsequent proxy gurus had simply "not overrun" the importance of TRs and tried to elevate it to transcendental ("spiritual") stature, it wouldn't have been half-bad. For example, the first-day com course could have taught these skills (assuming that the enrollee's parents had somehow forgotten to teach them the same skills when they were 3-6 years old).
- (OT-TR-O): Stop fidgeting so much, just relax and be there.
- (TR-0): Look at people when you are talking to them or they're talking to you.
- (BULLBAIT): Try to not react so much and just take in what's going on instead.
- (TR-1): Speak loudly/clearly enough so people can hear/understand you.
- (TR-2): Remember to respond appropriately so people know you heard them.
- (TR-3): If someone doesn't answer or respond what you said, you can repeat it in the same wording or any other wording that helps.
- (TR-4): If someone says something that sounds like it might be important to them (instead of answering what you asked them) it's a good idea to let them know you are not ignoring their concern before you continue to try to repeat your own concerns, questions, et al.
Instead of Hubbard recognizing that he had stumbled upon or stolen some workable drills to help hone another's basic communication skills, all manner of messianic methods & madness quickly crept into it. Without warning, the common-sense (and polite) drill to "look at someone while you are talking to them" instantly sprouted cosmic consequences such as:
- - If your MEST meat body blinks, it means your reactive mind is controlling your body and thoughts and this degraded level of non-confront will bar you from achieving upper-level miraculous powers.
- - If you cannot sit for 2 hours straight without blinking or moving a millimeter, you are not an able being who can apply Scientology to save yourself, save mankind and salvage this sector.
- - If you are the effect of your body's eyes and do not de-program and disengage their genetically reflexive response to clear dust-particles away by blinking, then you are not cause enough to attain "total freedom" and "eternity"---which means you are forever trapped in the MEST universe on this slave planet.
Hubbard was never satisfied to offer up a simple tool at a modestly affordable price. Instead, everything he did had to be embedded with transcendent and infinite significance, gravitas and supernatural mojo. If a couple's marriage is failing, then the remedy is the mystical TR-O, where they are ordered to stare at each other for endless hours until the hidden "charge" magically vanishes and they are happy, happy, happy together again. Ron in fact proved that this "confronting" tech worked on the second dynamic, not once---but on three separate occasions with each of his 3 previous ex-wives!
There are other profound mysteries concerning TRs, such as why Hubbard himself continuously blinked, blinked, blinked in the filmed interview he did in the late 1960s. He also twitched, twitched, twitched. Watch a minute and then try to explain to yourself why the infallible
inventor of TRs could not
do TRs, but instead used all manner of "physical vias", including but not limited to head jerks, hand gestures, chair shifting, head tilting, facial contortions, sniffs, scowls and snorts!
.
[ * ] example: Hubbard's inviolable financial policies which state that to achieve solvency/prosperity an organization/individual must never, ever borrow money. However, Scientology's organizations incessantly route all Scientologists to the "reg" (sales) office where they are indefatigably implored, compelled and coerced to increase their home mortgages and credit card limits in order to borrow themselves into blinding bankruptcy.]
[ ** ] example: Hubbard's compassionate care about the pre-clear's welfare within session resulted in the adoption of a strict "Auditor's Code" which (amongst other admonitions and prohibitions) vowed to never leave the PC in the middle of running an engram, implant, BT or other likewise debilitating "incident"---which could make them seriously ill, kill their MEST body and/or worse (deny them their "eternity"). Hubbard's therefore drafted certain spiritual technology safeguards to remedy anything in session that would prevent completing the auditing action to full erasure---such as demanding auditors purchase a second "backup" e-meter at full price in the 1 in 75M possibility that first one suddenly stopped working and there were no other Scientologists on the planet who were willing to loan their meter for a few minutes.
