Dream Exchange, the Chicago startup led by OT Scientologist Joe Cecala, in the wake of losing out on SEC approval to become a stock exchange, is blaming whistleblower Jeffery Ferrell for that failure, according to a defamation lawsuit filed against the former employee.
We became aware of Dream Exchange and its Scientologist CEO thanks to a terrific investigation by the Wall Street Journal that showed the small company was not leveling with its investors about the connection to Scientology, and for asking employees to take part in Scientology business practices.
After the Journal article, we noticed that Ferrell had posted his own criticisms of the company at his LinkedIn account, accusing Dream Exchange of saying that it wanted to attract minority-owned business owners as investors, while creating a discriminatory environment inside the company.
We asked Ferrell for permission to repost his LinkedIn statement, and then interviewed him about his specific complaints about Dream Exchange and Cecala, and about the Scientology he saw at the company. We emailed Cecala, also asking for his input, but did not receive a reply.
The SEC subsequently denied Dream Exchange’s application to become a stock exchange after a lengthy process.
Dream Exchange has now sued Ferrell, claiming that he had been terminated for being a poor-performing employee, and that he has violated contracts he signed which required him to keep the company’s proprietary information private and not to denigrate the firm.
