It was great to hear from Joy Villa, who let us know she had run across something we might want to see.
It’s a video she made several years ago while she was at Scientology’s UK headquarters, Saint Hill Manor.
She wanted us to see how ebullient she seems in it, and practiced, urging other Scientologists to get training as auditors, which was part of her role as one of the church’s celebrities. She was constantly being asked to promote the organization while going through grueling processes at the “Advanced Organization” there.
But at the same time that she was doing her best to seem “uptone,” she tells us she was actually completely miserable and was near her breaking point.
“That video was probably less than six months before my breakdown,” she says. And it was that breakdown, caused mainly, she says, by the pressure she was being put under to renounce Christianity before she could go onto the “OT Levels,” that finally led to her decision to leave.
We think it’s an interesting moment to consider her experience at a time when Scientology appears to be making some effort to convince young Christians to get involved.
Here, take a look at Joy’s pitch....
