Heber Jentzsch, Scientology’s longtime “president” (a nominal title), died on October 30 at the age of 89.
News of his death took a little while to get out of Scientology. We first heard about it from Karen de la Carriere in January. She had been married to Heber at one time, and she wrote a touching tribute for us.
At the same time, we were also hearing that David Miscavige, Scientology’s reclusive and ruthless leader, had done something unusual by writing some kind of tribute to Heber.
For the most part, deaths in Scientology, even among longtime, high-ranking executives, go unmentioned and un-memorialized in the church. In part, this may be a result of Scientology’s belief that a “thetan” merely picks up a new body after a lifetime ends, and they expect that someone who dies will soon return.
Heber, however, had been an immensely popular figure in the church before he was put away as a prisoner in The Hole at Int Base for so many years. And probably because of that popularity, we heard that Miscavige had made an exception, posting something about Heber’s death for viewing at Scientology orgs. We were anxious to see what this was, but we were unable to get a copy of it. Until now.
Alex Barnes-Ross managed to get an image of Miscavige’s tribute to Heber out to us, and we are presenting it here to you in full.
We asked Karen to take a look at it, and she gave us a very interesting response, which follows Miscavige’s tribute.
