Scientology’s micro-managing current leader, David Miscavige, today marks 66 years on the planet. (And so does his twin sister, Denise.)
Dave’s father Ron Miscavige, who died in 2021, said that he had introduced his kids to Scientology because he was hoping to find a cure for Dave’s asthma. By the time he was 12, Dave was such a prodigy at Scientology processing, the family had moved to Saint Hill Manor in England and Dave was being hailed as the church’s youngest professional auditor. He later joined the Sea Org at 16 and began rising up its ranks.
He soon caught founder L. Ron Hubbard’s eye, who in 1977 was making movies in the Southern California desert. Miscavige became a cameraman on Hubbard’s crew.
After Hubbard went into seclusion in 1980, Miscavige continued to consolidate power, and he muscled others out of the way when Hubbard died in January 1986, replacing Hubbard as Scientology’s ultimate leader.
We pointed out in 2021 that Miscavige has now been leading the Dianetics and Scientology movement longer than Hubbard did.
However, as ruthless and controlling as Miscavige is said to be by those who formerly worked with him, the diminutive leader (his former tailor says Miscavige is 5-foot-1, “max”) knows he can’t replace Hubbard as “Source,” the originator of the “technology” that Scientology is based on.
So even if Scientology isn’t about him, Miscavige finds ways to make it reflect his own personal intensity. His focus on extreme fundraising, for example, has driven away large numbers of longtime members, and there’s simply no question that Scientology is a smaller phenomenon today than when Dave took over.
