There is also a message in that thread from “Flossie” the significant other of EJ Steinke. One of my very first jobs was working for EJ. I had no idea he was later buds with Sonny Bono. And the ONLY reason I post this is for the comment by Phil’s granddaughter.

omg laughing my ass off. had no idea reddit was so hopping on the ex-scn stuff. some scn promo video posted and the guy asks what OT level is it that you can cut wood without the sawdust. best answer was isn't that the "S" in MEST? hilarious. p.s. some guy is looking for a therapist in clearwater. so far he hasn't had much luck.

For those who knew Dean Stokes, who took over the Dallas Mission after Alan Walter got axed, the up to date news is that he has passed away.
This after a rather long scene of ill health.
He passed yesterday, I believe.
News in from Panama where spent lots of time seeking treatments.

additions to my EJ Steinke jabber:
it was probably 1971ish when i worked a few days for EJ. he had a walk-in closet where he stuck a table and phone. he hired me to call people off a long list while sitting in the closet, lol. so i proceeded to do that. well... i smoked a pack a day then and his beautiful wardrobe quickly stunk. so much for that job. (not sure why he didn't just say don't smoke in there haha)
so he had this beautiful girlfriend somewhere around that time. blonde, cathy carter. she was a singer in a bar. apparently he dumped her and she was beyond devastated. absolutely beside herself. years later in the 80's, i had this weird date and we went to see cathy singing in a bar in fremont. by the end of her set/end of night, she was soooo drunk she could barely stand up. never mind sing!

So no idea what finally happened to Dan or John Woodruff. Claire seems to have passed. Cindy and Dan split up forever ago and not sure if he had another wife or children. The web seems to think there was a wife. Malcolm and Phillida ended up living near John/Claire. With a daughter in San Diego.

i crack up here. i bought battlefield earth and i was long out. one of my sisters got married in mexico in 1984 and i dragged that huge ass book along for the ride. don't think i ever read one page of it. was never a sci fi fan. but i was googling what happened to charlie and he seems to have written something that was in that book. so strange.
the 1975 newsletter had a few people i knew that i see actually did make it to asho, pretty much the same time i did. never saw them there though. after i arrived in LA, all hell broke loose. i was told that to complete the IV internship there, you basically had to be OT. i was definitely not that. oh well. i did run into some people i knew that i didn't realize would be there. and i'm mystified now, why the one friend i re-connected with in the 80's and 90's never mentioned a word about the mission massacre. she must not have known, and i thought she knew everything.
after all this jabber, i have to conclude that all the lifers, whether they were in or out as indies, must be kinda loopy!

I thought the writing style different. I purchased the whole series and kept them next to the tech vols on the shelf next to them. I had vol 1 read to me because I just couldn't bring myself to get into the whole Mission Earth series. Maybe the colorful book jackets were the attraction for me.
You were googling what happened to Charlie? I missed something there. It's late. I must need to expand those newsletters.
Charlie Mears was on the clear list. He was from the palo alto mission but i’m pretty sure i only knew his name from my mother. I think Mimi must have known him. But the Meta SF book said it had stories in it from all those other people. Published 1982. The web thinks Charlie lives in Pacoima. I couldn’t find anybody here in the bay area that he was/is related to.

Well, they never came to their senses and disconnected from the abuse. I think some people were just lucky enough never to have gotten that much.
I was always so happy thinking I was going to do the FEBC or the OEC or the Saint Hill Course, But in 82/ 83 you could purchase just about any materials from the Flag bookstore after it relocated to where cramming used to be, just past the poolside HGC, below the mezzanine. That's when some ah ha moments went from, ah ha Truth!......to, 'well that bit don't seem to be that true'.
