A happy winter solstice to our northern hemisphere readers! And to our antipodean friends, enjoy your summer! Yes, once again it’s time to take stock of the year with our annual review, which begins today.
When we looked back at the stories we wrote this past year, again and again we were struck by how much we were paying attention to the way Scientology was interacting with, influencing, or reacting to the decisions being made by government officials.
Sure, as a worldwide ‘religious’ organization, the Church of Scientology is always colliding with, or co-opting, or colluding with government officials here, there, and everywhere.
But this year in particular it felt like Scientology’s fate was particularly tied to politicians and civil servants, in places like the White House, Clearwater, East Grinstead, and Los Angeles.
We’ve been telling you how remarkable it is to see high-ranking Scientologists have so much influence in DC with the current administration, for example. But at the same time, Alex Barnes-Ross had another monster year in 2025 and that’s made things tricky for Scientology at its UK headquarters in England with local government officials. In Clearwater, meanwhile, Scientology is fighting over a local street and that battle was very interesting to watch this year. And in LA, Scientology really made a statement when it went all-in with its support for Danny Masterson’s attempt to get his conviction overturned in appellate court.
