Our esteemed departed commenter Captain Howdy once said that “a day without Kirstie Alley is like a day without donuts.”
He was referring to how outspoken the former Cheers actress was on social media. She was supportive and accessible to fans, but she was also caustic when it came to people she didn’t like. It was entertaining to watch and, well, we have to agree with Howdy: We do miss Kirstie, now more than three years since she succumbed to cancer at only 71 years of age.
For so many years before her death, when we were asked about Scientology’s celebrities, we would refer to “the big three”: Cruise, Travolta, and Alley, a lineup that hadn’t changed in decades.
In 2018, we reported that Kirstie had attained OT 8, the highest rung on Scientology’s “Bridge to Total Freedom,” which should have, according to founder L. Ron Hubbard, granted her the ability to leave her body at will, and to have cause over matter, energy, space, and time. She would, in other words, have total mastery over the reality around her, and should have been able to create objects simply by thinking of them.
And by that reckoning, the last thing that should bring down an OT 8 is a case of colon cancer. So, when the sudden news of her death was revealed in December 2022, naturally there were questions about whether, like some other OT Scientologists, Kirstie had eschewed traditional medical care in order to rely on her Scientology “tech” to cure her.
Her representatives denied it, saying that her case came up suddenly (she was diagnosed only six months before, in May 2022), and that she had gotten high quality treatment.
But even so, former Scientologists will tell you that church members are stunned when they hear that an OT dies of something like cancer. That just shouldn’t happen. And with the cancer deaths in recent years of such high-profile Scientology OTs as Alley, Chick Corea, and Kelly Preston, you might think that it could cause some people still in this totalitarian group to begin asking questions.
