We received a startling email from a longtime reader who from time to time sends us suggestions and ideas.
This former Scientologist had made a recent trip to a part of the country where he had done auditor training years ago when he was still in the church.
And perhaps it was that trip which jogged his memory, he said, but suddenly he realized there was something we might want to know about regarding the training he had gone through.
“I don’t know why it took me so long to make this connection, but even though Danny Masterson has already been convicted and is sitting in prison, I still think it’s relevant to point this out,” our reader said.
“While I was doing my auditor training, one of the videos they showed us —which are made to be like Hollywood movies — featured a stranded space ranger who had run away from Scientology. An auditor was sent on a space ship to go recover him on the planet were he was hiding.
“This is where it gets interesting — the runaway gets a sec check [a Scientology interrogation] and his biggest and final confession is that he had drugged and raped a woman. Upon confessing, he was relieved, and everyone was happy for him.
“It was highly uncomfortable for me back then, realizing I was essentially being expected to work with rapists, but today it reads almost like a blueprint: On the one hand, it shows parishioners that they would be forgiven for rape and can continue doing Scientology as this ranger suddenly wanted to do again — the rape being the sin that ultimately made him leave Scientology — and on the other hand, it shows auditors that pulling a rape confession like this is preferable to sending the guy to the police to be prosecuted.
“And here’s the kicker — the ranger was played by none other than Jason Beghe.”
