Alex Barnes-Ross is keeping us in the loop about Scientology’s development plans at its UK headquarters, Saint Hill Manor in East Grinstead, England.
It was Alex, a former London Scientology staffer, who first pointed out that Scientology had not asked for necessary permits to put up its giant annual tent for the autumn IAS Gala each year.
But rather than seek that permission, Scientology leader David Miscavige instead submitted expansive plans to put in a large car park on a couple of fields which turned out to be in critical Great Crested Newt territory, a highly protected species.
Even after Scientology made some modifications to its plans, claiming that it was minimizing damage to the newt habitat, the church was informed that if its plans were approved, they would need to have a license from newt experts at environmental agency NatureSpace.
Well, Alex sent us the documents that have now come in from NatureSpace, which spell out all of the hoops Scientology is going to have to jump through in order to be in compliance, as well as the cost of a license to proceed.
Alex points out that with taxes, the total amount is going to be about $100,000 US just for the right to proceed, even before all of the actual work begins.
Sure, Dave can write that check from his petty cash account.
However, Alex points out that there’s some irony in that amount, $100,000 for the project in England.
