There’s even more bad news for Scientology when it comes to its expansion plans for its UK headquarters, Saint Hill Manor in East Grinstead, England.
You know the backstory: Former London staffer Alex Barnes-Ross discovered that Scientology had failed to seek permission for its annual practice of erecting a giant tent on Saint Hill’s grounds for its autumnal three-day IAS gala.
Rather than simply knuckle-under and ask for that permission, Scientology did the David Miscavige thing and instead submitted a planning application to local government for a much bigger project: Converting some empty fields into cark parks, with new lights and restrooms and other improvements, including new cement footings for the giant tent.
But Scientology is finding that local governments and non-profit organizations are not so amenable to its plans to pave over ground in a place that features ancient woodlands and local fauna.
One environmental group pointed out that the area is critical habitat for one of England’s most protected species, the Great Crested Newt, and even Scientology had to admit that newts will perish if they pave over the fields.
