While we wait to see which of Scientology’s big donors were bestowed new trophies this past Saturday night at the IAS Patrons Ball, it turns out that the church put out a new Impact magazine recently and we’re only now just hearing about it.
It’s in Impact that donors are celebrated, and we have a whole new set of them for you today, even as the really big party for moneybags took place at the IAS gala this weekend at Scientology’s UK headquarters, Saint Hill Manor in East Grinstead, England.
This recent list of benefactors that appeared in Impact don’t seem to be tied to a particular event. Photos of them are casual and seem to be at their homes. But it’s always fun to see the faces of people who have been convinced that Scientology is still enough of a going concern that it deserves so much of their money.
For our newer readers, this is what we’re going on about: All Scientologists are under intense pressure to donate huge sums for a variety of different projects and in a variety of different ways. But one of the most important ways to contribute is by donating to what started out as a defense fund for the church in 1984, the International Association of Scientologists (IAS).
Scientologists are pressured to keep giving in order to reach a new cumulative goal in their total overall spending. This is called a “status,” and they have fancy names. Donate $500,000 overall to the IAS, for example, and you are given the fancy status “Silver Meritorious.” It’s like a game for rich people, who try to give enough to get to the next level. [For an explanation of how we know what amounts the statuses represent or the estimates we’ve made for some of them, see our methodology here.]
