For our newer readers, this is what we’re going on about: All Scientologists are under intense pressure to donate huge sums for a variety of different projects and in a variety of different ways. But one of the most important ways to contribute is by donating to what started out as a defense fund for the church in 1984. The International Association of Scientologists (IAS) this year celebrated its 41st anniversary as it usually does, under a giant tent at Scientology’s UK headquarters in East Grinstead, England.
Exceptions to that rule occurred in 2013, when the IAS gala was held in Clearwater, Florida, and then the years 2020 to 2022 when no event was held because of the pandemic. Church leader David Miscavige brought back the tradition in 2023, and once again held it in England this past October 31 to November 2.
On the second night of the three-day party, the Patrons Ball is held to celebrate donors who have, during the past year, reached a new cumulative goal in their total overall spending. This is called a “status,” and they have fancy names. Donate $500,000 overall to the IAS, for example, and you are given the fancy status “Silver Meritorious.” It’s like a game for rich people, who try to give enough to get to the next level. After the event, photos of the donors with their new trophies are published by the church in Impact magazine, and we enjoy helping them get the word out. This is big news, people! And this year, Miscavige was so successful getting huge amounts out of so many donors, we’ve once again had to divide the list in half. Today, we have the folks who have donated up to $750,000. Tomorrow, we’ll have the truly gigantic leviathans.
