Leah Remini lawsuit gets hearing date at appeals court, and we can all tune in!

Leah Remini’s “Fair Game” lawsuit against the Church of Scientology was filed in 2023, but it got derailed when both sides didn’t like a preliminary ruling by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Randolph Hammock.
Scientology had attempted to gut the lawsuit with an anti-SLAPP motion, asking that various allegations be pulled out of the case because, they claimed, the things they had said about Leah online were protected by the First Amendment or were out of date and didn’t qualify as defamation.
Judge Hammock did remove some of the allegations, but he let stand nearly all of the causes of action Leah had included in her complaint, including stalking and interference with her ability to do business.
Both sides were unhappy with Hammock’s ruling, and after Scientology appealed it, Leah joined as well. (Hammock is no longer handling the case.)
Then came more than a year of briefing at the appellate level, and now finally we have an oral arguments hearing date from the Second Appellate District: July 23 at 9 am in Los Angeles.
Luckily for all of us, we don’t have to be in LA to see it happen. The hearing will be streamed online, and we can all watch it live!
We’ll be looking to see what kinds of questions the justices ask as some indication of which issues they are wrestling with.
