May 9 is one of the holiest days on the Scientology calendar, and it’s easy to understand why.
It was on May 9, 1950 that L. Ron Hubbard first published Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, and began what would eventually become the Scientology movement.
For that reason, last year’s 75th anniversary was a really big deal for avid Hubbardites, and current Scientology leader David Miscavige went all out, not only holding a special event at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida, but also announcing a new 75th anniversary edition of Dianetics, as well as a forthcoming Scientology TV show about Dianetics hosted by actor Jason Dohring.
After that big effort last year, when May 9 came around this time, we were actually surprised to learn that Scientology would once again be holding an anniversary celebration at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Really? For the 76th anniversary? Was this going to be an annual thing now, on the level with New Year’s, Hubbard’s birthday (March 13), and the IAS gala in October as major events?
Well, we finally got a better look at what happened on May 9 this time in Clearwater because Scientology has posted a slide show about it, and the first thing we noted is that this was clearly a second-tier event, and not on the level of the other big galas.
