It’s always interesting to see a major media organization take on the subject of Scientology, and put in so much effort and care as was obvious in the documentary that aired last night in France.
Filmmaker Romain Icard assembled some of the most interesting historic footage from all of Scientology’s eras in order to tell this story, along with compelling interviews of former members in France and elsewhere.
We particularly enjoyed the creativity of the Xenu sequence, which is certainly the best since Alex Gibney’s HBO movie Going Clear and its wonderful OT 3 telling in 2015. And overall, we think this may be the best single film about Scientology since Gibney’s Emmy-winning documentary (taking nothing away from Leah Remini and Mike Rinder and their superb A&E series).
Alex Barnes-Ross is an important part of this movie, and we know that he had worked very hard with Icard to make this project a reality. We asked him for his thoughts about the film, which you can watch at France5’s site (but you may need a VPN to get it to play).

Despite Scientology’s best efforts to get this documentary shut down, France Télévisions refused to back down and ‘Scientologie: L’Empire du Secret’ aired on TV screens across the country in the prime time Sunday night slot.
This project has been in the works for the best part of three years and the producer, Romain Icard, has been carefully following my efforts here in the UK throughout.
The result is a hard-hitting investigation that challenges Scientology’s harmful practices of disconnection and Fair Game — and I couldn’t be prouder to have been a part of it.
