For more than a year now, we’ve been pointing out the way wealthy Scientologists have taken up positions of influence with the current White House gang. Figures like Trish Duggan (the wealthiest of all Scientology donors), John P. Coale, and Grant and Elena Cardone, all have connections to the president.
We also pointed out that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has a longtime relationship with a couple of OT Scientologist attorneys who, with Kennedy’s help, have crusaded against vaccines like Gardasil in litigation. In fact, when Kennedy was going through confirmation hearings, it was one of the biggest issues raised by his detractors: Would he continue to take money from those cases while he was at HHS.
Now, more than a year into his tenure, Kennedy this week announced a program to scale back the prescribing of antidepressants, which also happens to be one of Scientology’s most longtime and cherished goals.
Scientology operates numerous front groups that play down their connections to the church while promoting the “genius” of founder L. Ron Hubbard. But among the front groups, Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) is the most rabid and unhinged about its goals: To eradicate the psychiatric profession.
We’ve documented over the years how CCHR, despite being more open than other front groups about how it’s forwarding Scientology’s goals, on occasion finds politicians and even medical professionals to help push its agendas. And in the HHS effort against antidepressants the White House will no doubt find advocates who will couch this as a reasoned and healthy debate.
