[The president and his Scientology-friendly attorney general]
Jeffrey Augustine broke the news this weekend and the New York Times confirmed it this morning: Only a few days into his seven-year prison sentence, convicted fraudster David Gentile had his sentence commuted by President Donald Trump and he was freed from federal prison on Wednesday.
The Times noted that Gentile’s partner in crime, Jeffry Schneider, was sentenced to six years in prison but has not receive clemency from the president.
What the Times didn’t point out, however, is that Gentile is a wealthy, longtime Scientologist and Schneider is not. (Unlike an outright pardon, Gentile’s commutation means that his conviction stands, even though he won’t serve any more time in prison.)
The Times said there didn’t seem to be a connection between Gentile and the White House, and it quoted a White House official who said the clemency was related to the Department of Justice falsely referring to Gentile’s company GPB Capital as a “Ponzi scheme.”
But the prosecution in Gentile’s case had shown that the business operated as a “Ponzi-like” scam that used investor money to cover up its losses.
“The stories that we’ve heard are just heartbreaking, and it’s just unbelievable that somebody like that would receive a commutation. This is not a case that should be political. This guy belongs in prison,” attorney Adam Gana, who represents victimized investors, told the Times.
For months we’ve been pointing out the strong connections between the second Trump administration and the Church of Scientology, and this may be the most glaring example of it yet, a favor to a wealthy Scientologist just days into his prison sentence, and with no other discernible reason why.
Trump appointed Scientology’s wealthiest donor Trish Duggan to the board of trustees at the Kennedy Center. He named OT Scientologist and attorney John P. Coale to be his deputy envoy to Ukraine while key negotiations are going on. Another major Scientology donor, Grant Cardone, spoke at the Madison Square Garden rally a week before the election. And Pam Bondi, the US Attorney General, has a long relationship with Scientology and has praised its “human rights” agenda.
We also pointed out the connections between Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to OT Scientologist attorneys who are leading a years-long litigation war against the manufacturers of the devices used in ECT.
In this case, of course, it’s Bondi’s longtime friendliness to Scientology that is most relevant.
Trump frees Scientologist fraudster, doesn't free non-Scientologist crime partner
