Scientology has put out yet another press release celebrating the grand opening of a new “Ideal Mission,” this time in Sacramento, California, less than a month after a similar celebration just down the freeway in San Jose.
“Situated just minutes from downtown Sacramento, Arden-Arcade is renowned as one of the most economically and ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the region—blending the bustling energy of California’s capital with the close-knit warmth of its vibrant American River–front community,” the press release gushed. “In this dynamic setting, the newly transformed Ideal Church of Scientology Mission of Riverpark opened its doors on October 12, following a dedication ceremony attended by parishioners, civic leaders and humanitarian partners from across greater Sacramento.”
Church leader David Miscavige began his “Ideal Org” program more than 20 years ago, and its aim is to replace the normal “orgs” (Scientology’s word for churches) with larger, and newer cathedrals that are “Ideal.” There are 68 of them now, from Tokyo to Dallas to Rome and a lot of other major cities around the world.
Each of those new facilities arrive with a major “grand opening” that Miscavige himself presides over. (Tom Cruise only showed up at one Ideal Org grand opening, in Madrid in 2004.) Only one Ideal Org grand opening has occurred this year, when Miscavige presided over the dedication of a building in South Africa in April. That’s in contrast to four grand openings in 2024 (Austin, Chicago, Mexico City, and Paris), in part because they had been delayed by the pandemic.
