Scientology chose Wednesday to put out a press release announcing that it had opened another “Ideal Mission” last month, on September 21.

The delay in announcing the news seems a little odd, but it’s the location that is the real puzzler.

“At the very core of Silicon Valley—the global hub of innovation, technology and forward-thinking ideas—a new beacon of spiritual technology now rises in San Jose,” Scientology said in its typical breathless way.

Church leader David Miscavige began his “Ideal Org” program more than 20 years ago, and its aim is to replace the normal “orgs” (Scientology’s word for churches) with larger, and newer cathedrals that are “Ideal.” There are 68 of them now, from Tokyo to Phoenix to Brussels and a lot of other major cities around the world.

Each of those new facilities arrive with a major “grand opening” that Miscavige himself presides over. (Tom Cruise only showed up at one Ideal Org grand opening, in Madrid in 2004.)

More recently, Scientology has also been giving new coats of paint to smaller “missions,” and has been calling them “Ideal.” But these are not the major fundraising or construction efforts that are involved in Ideal Orgs.

And here’s the odd thing. Scientology made a really big deal in 2018 when it opened a new Ideal Org in “Silicon Valley.” It’s in Mountain View, and it had its grand opening on February 18 that year.
