This is a direct (and hilarious) quote, including being in all caps, from a book I'm currently reading, "Washita Love Child, The Rise of Indigenous Rock Star Jesse Ed Davis". I enjoy reading and learning more about all the great musicians I appreciate. Jesse Ed Davis was a very talented native American guitarist, coming out of Oklahoma along with Leon Russell, drummer Ed Blackwell, bass player Carl Radle and others. He also played and recorded with Stephen Stills, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and many, many more big names.
Like so many greats of the genre and era, he was eventually done in by substance abuse, which plays a part in this passage from the book:
"Given Jesse's unpredictability , the Grafitti Band had to remain flexible. After Dylan hyped them in Rolling Stone in 1986, a packed house immediately awaited at Club Lingerie. Jesse was again incapacitated. Rolling Stones keyboardist Nicky Hopkins took the stage in his absence to help fill the musical void. Kelly Davis left in disgust. After the gig, Hopkins drove Jesse to a Scientology detox center.* "He woke up in a fucking Scientologist room," Trudell mused. "YOU GAVE ME TO THE SCIENTOLOGISTS?!" Jesse cried when he got back. "He didn't do that again", Trudel said."
*(Nicky Hopkins was one of the best at adding piano accompaniment to make good music better. He wasn't a full fledged "Rolling Stones keyboardist" as erroneously stated here, but did accompany the band for a tour and played on several of their studio albums. He also played with the Kinks, Jeff Beck, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service and many others. Because of his frequent ill health due to Crohn's disease, he was never a permanent member of any band, and couldn't commit to much touring. He was a Scientologist and played on Hubbard's weird "Space Jazz" album along with Edgar Winter and Chick Corea. One of my greatest regrets is that I was invited to meet him at Scientology's CCNY (Celebrity Center New York), when I was working as a non-contracted auditor for an actual hourly wage rate, and was stuck in a session when he was available.)
