Over the past week we’ve taken a couple of looks at California gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra’s past as an enthusiastic Scientology booster. But we wondered, how does he feel about Scientology today?
And now we have an answer.
Previously, we had received a statement from Becerra’s spokesman, Jonathan Underland, after we asked about then-US Rep. Becerra showing up at a 2003 Scientology Hollywood Celebrity Centre gala and hobnobbing with the likes of Jenna Elfman and Tom Cruise.
Underland dismissed it as something any Congressperson might do.
“As a member of Congress, Xavier Becerra met with constituents from across his district and made a point of engaging with all communities and organizations represented there,” he said.
But over the weekend a reporter with SF Standard, Jennifer Wadsworth, asked Underland if that really addressed what the Underground Bunker had dug up about Becerra’s activities for the church.
We found, for example, that in the year 2000, Becerra helped Scientology dedicate the new international headquarters of ABLE, the church’s subsidiary that runs its front groups, like Applied Scholastics and Narconon. Not only did Becerra give a speech at that event, he was introduced by ABLE president Rena Weinberg, a woman who, a few years later, became an inmate in Scientology’s notorious prison for executives, The Hole, and later simply vanished.
