Tonight at 9 pm Eastern, 6 pm in California, the candidates for governor in that fair state will face off for the first debate since they advanced in a June primary.
Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton were the top two vote-getters in the primary, but since then Becerra has enjoyed a widening lead in polls (he’s up 25 points, 58 to 33, in a poll released by UC Berkeley last week), and as a result he’s been running a low-key campaign.
It’s easy to understand why. He’s cruising to victory and doesn’t want to mess that up with an awkward press interview or personal appearance. Hilton, meanwhile, has been campaigning energetically and giving interviews every chance he gets.
The reason we have some interest in this race is that on April 11, Yashar Ali made a statement on social media that Becerra had ties with Scientology that no one was talking about.
We followed that up with some reporting on the specifics.
On May 13, we pointed out that Scientology’s own publications showed that Becerra had presided over the grand opening of a new church facility in 2000, the new headquarters of the Association for Better Living and Education in Hollywood. We also found photos of Becerra at a 2003 Hollywood Celebrity Centre gala, and it turned out that Becerra was a featured guest and gave a speech on that occasion as well.
