In a Los Angeles courtroom this week, Superior Court Judge Kevin Brazile heard from the Church of Scientology that Valerie Haney’s “religious arbitration” is still not completed, and so he scheduled another hearing for March 25.
Valerie, who first filed her lawsuit against Scientology in 2019, tells us that she’s not amused.
“It’s unbelievable. I’m just trying to live my life, but this isn’t helping,” she told us by telephone last night. “It’s a constant battle for getting my life back because they took it away from me. They took my rights away when I was eight years old. There’s no justice, and no light at the end of the tunnel. Like you’ve said, they can just string this along forever, and my judge isn’t going to do anything about it. Why can’t they say enough is enough? Please stop the abuse.”
Over the years we’ve been covering Val’s lawsuit, we hear from observers, even lawyers, who are shocked that the court seems powerless, and that Scientology gets to set all the rules of its arbitration — including that Valerie cannot bring an attorney with her to the sessions, can’t bring her phone or any electronic devices into the room, or even have a transcript made.
Valerie’s story has received wide coverage in the past because she was featured in the premiere episode of the third season of Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath, describing her crazy escape from Scientology’s “Int Base” in the trunk of a car.
She sued Scientology in June 2019 over the way she was treated as a Sea Org worker, and for the “Fair Game” harassment she endured after leaving the organization.
