Two US senators — Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) — are asking the Department of Justice for answers after news has emerged that Trump appointees killed a DOJ investigation into a suspicious clemency by the White House.
Last December, President Trump commuted the 7-year prison sentence of David Gentile after the convicted fraudster had only served 12 days in prison. Gentile had been found guilty of running a Ponzi-like $1.6 billion-scam, but Trump not only freed him from prison, but also removed Gentile obligation to pay victims $15.5 million in restitution.
What made it especially interesting to us is that Gentile is a longtime New York Scientology donor, and the White House didn’t pardon Gentile’s partner in crime, Jeffrey Schneider, who was also sentenced to years in prison but is not a Scientologist.
Recent reporting by the New York Times, however, suggests that the clemency was arranged by a former Roman Catholic priest who was close to Trump, and who Gentile boasted to fellow inmates that he’d paid $2.5 million to arrange the commutation.
When the DOJ began to look into that allegation of impropriety, it was shut down by Trump appointees.
Now, Senators Blumenthal and Gallego want answers about why that investigation was stopped.
