As expected, the Mid Sussex District Council went ahead with a vote yesterday to deny Scientology a protest ban outside of its UK headquarters Saint Hill Manor, even though Scientology had withdrawn its request for the ban at the last minute.

But what made it an even worse publicity debacle for the church was that a well-known and common Scientology tactic backfired pretty spectacularly as it was called out by Robert Eggleston, the lead councillor.

We told you last week that once the documents were made public in the nearly year-long investigation of whether to grant Scientology’s request for the ban — known as a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) — we got a chance to see what the church’s evidence had been that such a drastic measure was needed.

And included in that packet of information was classic Scientology “dead agent” material — dossiers on some of the protesters who had showed up at demonstrations in 2023 and 2024 at Scientology’s IAS gala at Saint Hill, and even data on at least one person who had not showed up to either event.

This lurid cloak-and-dagger approach is simply what Scientology has always done, and it’s based on a policy for discrediting critics using a method called “Dead Agenting” by founder L. Ron Hubbard, who is known as “Source” — and his policies cannot be altered, even though he’s been dead for 39 years.

Good stuff! The basic game Miscavige/CofS plays is to try to impose their self-serving reality and their self-serving agenda on the world, and its so gratifying when they try to steamroll over authority and authority pushes back, calls them out and puts them in their place. I would hope that more justices in the US would take note, find their genitals and do the same.

Bearing in mind that I've never been on staff and this is therefore hearsay; I don't think it is a choice, to be honest.

People on Scn staff are required to follow Hubbard's instructions to the letter, there is no room for flexibility and no exceptions are made. If it is determined that there are people who pose a threat to the organisation and need (according to Scn policy) to be dead agented, then they have to do it.

It sounds like their solicitor isn't himself on staff, since he's showing a bit more flexibility in trying to map out a solution that will be acceptable to both parties.

On staff, it is total defense to reference a policy for whatever you're doing, and you are totally vulnerable if found or judged to be "off-policy"*. But this only applies within the organization staff. As far as aggressive action against outsiders, that is, generally, only relegated to their "Office of Special Affairs", and on occasion, whatever staff they may deputize for a specific occasion or perceived or projected situation.
*(But keep in mind, Hubbard's proliferation of policies sometimes conflicted with each other, depending on what specific situation he was overreacting to at that time. He spoke out of both sides of his mouth generally enough for Scientology staff to employ dueling policies when in (not-uncommon) conflict with each other).
