It’s official: The Mid Sussex District Council’s staff is recommending that the council not seek a special law that would ban protests outside the Church of Scientology’s UK headquarters, Saint Hill Manor, in East Grinstead, England.
For weeks, former London Scientology staffer Alex Barnes-Ross, who organized protests outside Saint Hill’s annual autumn “IAS” events in 2023 and 2024, has been updating us on the hard work he’s put in to try and convince the council that Scientology’s request for a ban was unnecessary and extreme.
Rather than take the drastic step of banning protests, the council got both sides to agree to codes of conduct (which were for the most part simply a recognition of existing laws), and the ban, known as a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), will not be recommended to the council.
As a result — and here’s the really fun part — all of the documents associated with the months-long investigation into a PSPO have now been made public at the council’s website. (And thanks, Alex, for the head’s up!)
What this allows us to do is sift through some of the fact-gathering reports to get a sense of why the council’s staff came to its decision.
