We love the city of Philadelphia, and we are glad that our Philly friends had reason to celebrate the victory of their football Eagles last night in a lopsided 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX at New Orleans.
But wow, what a lousy game. The Chiefs, going for an historic three-peat, never really showed up, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes, when he wasn’t being swarmed by the Eagles defense, just couldn’t seem to throw to his own team. For those of us merely hoping for a close, exciting game, it was not an enjoyable night. Even most of the commercials seemed obnoxious and unfunny.
However, we also watch the Super Bowl to see the reactions to the ad that the Church of Scientology airs in local spots in some markets, now for the thirteenth year in a row. And there were a couple of additional reasons for Scientology watchers to pay some attention last night.
First, it was the NFL’s decision to have Tom Cruise come on and deliver one of those earnest pre-game essays to make sure that viewers all realized how much was at stake for the players.
After the stunt that Cruise pulled at the Paris Olympics and now as the sort of official NFL mouthpiece before the big game, is it possible for a major sporting event not to feature this 62-year-old actor who symbolizes Scientology’s controversies and still, somehow, never gets canceled for choosing this abusive organization over his own daughter?
