It’s been almost three years since Leah Remini filed her “Fair Game” lawsuit against the Church of Scientology on August 2, 2023. She is alleging that Scientology’s relentless campaigns against her online, and in real life, are impacting her ability to make a living as the church constantly spews what she says are provable lies.
Scientology counters that Leah started things with her A&E series Scientology and the Aftermath, and that the First Amendment protects the church’s right to say what it wants about her.
An initial ruling in the case granted part of Scientology’s anti-SLAPP motion and struck some of Leah’s defamation claims, saying that they were things said about her by the church that were merely opinion, or were out of date. But that ruling kept in seven of her eight causes of action, including the allegations of stalking.
Scientology didn’t like the ruling and appealed, Leah was also unhappy that some of her defamation allegations had been struck, and so she cross-appealed as well. After more than a year of briefing, the Second Appellate District is holding an oral arguments hearing this morning in Los Angeles to hear both sides.
And the best part is, we can tune in and watch it live as the court streams it online.
The session is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am Los Angeles time (12:00 pm New York, 5:00 pm London), and just before that the court will make the online link available. We’ll post it here and at social media as soon as it’s up.
