[Becerra and Jenna Elfman, yukking it up]
We live in New York now, but your Proprietor is originally from Southern California, and we have to admit that we haven’t been watching the political scene out there very carefully.
We were only vaguely aware that former frontrunner Rep. Eric Swalwell dropped out of the gubernatorial race in April over sexual assault allegations, leaving the distinct possibility that the two top vote-getters in the June 2 primary could both be Republicans in California’s unusual election scheme, icing Democrats out of the general election entirely.
But then Xavier Becerra, a former Democratic U.S. Representative, Health and Human Services Secretary, and California Attorney General who had been polling in the single digits, began a meteoric rise. He’s now polling at 20 percent, just behind Republican candidate Steve Hilton and ahead of Democrat Tom Steyer.
Along the way, many Californians were discovering Becerra’s longtime public service record and his positions on the issues, and they were coming away impressed.
On April 11, when one Twitter user expressed his increasing admiration for Becerra, Yashar Ali stunned many with this response…
Several readers asked us about Yashar’s tweet, wondering what we might know about Becerra and Scientology, and we had to admit that nothing rang a bell.
But, as the questions kept coming, we decided to do a little digging, and sure enough, we found some very interesting connections between Becerra and David Miscavige’s controversial organization.
