Ah, the Gaiman family. You can’t talk about the history of Scientology in the UK without taking them into consideration, can you?
David Gaiman was probably the most prominent UK Scientologist of all time. He was a Guardian’s Office operative in the Snow White Project, and was named an unindicted co-conspirator by the Department of Justice after the 1977 FBI raid. He was Scientology’s spokesman in England, showed up in a memorable episode of 60 Minutes with Mike Wallace, and was at one point “declared” by Scientology (excommunicated) but was later readmitted. He died in 2009.
The rest of the family was deeply involved in Scientology as well, including David’s wife Sheila. Together they founded and ran G&G Vitamins, which supplies Scientology’s UK headquarters in East Grinstead. (Vitamins are a big part of founder L. Ron Hubbard’s “tech.”) Sheila continued to make large donations to Scientology after David’s death, and was named a “New Civilization Builder” for donating at least $1 million to an “Ideal Org” project.
David and Sheila had three children, all of whom became Scientologists. Lizzy Calcioli is still an outspoken church member and has taken over running G&G Vitamins. Her son Alessandro and his bride Louisa Hodkin became the first to marry in England in 2014 after a court ruled that Scientology “houses of worship” qualified for official religious weddings.
Lizzy’s sister Claire is a member of Scientology’s Sea Organization in the US. And their brother Neil Gaiman, the famous sci-fi/fantasy author, was, until the mid-1980s or so, a dedicated Scientologist auditor and staff member. After his writing career took off, he tended to say very little about his earlier involvement in the church.
