Happy Boxing Day! Just yesterday we posted our annual Christmas tribute to Shelly Miscavige, and now we have something related to it. And although we tend not to report so much about the goings on at YouTube, we appreciated this report sent in by one of our more helpful readers and thought you’d like to see it…
YouTuber Tyler Oliveira (8.5 million subscribers) recently joined the growing ranks of online creators who have discovered that provoking Scientology facilities makes for reliable content.
A video he posted a few days ago carried the grandiose title, “I Exposed the Most Evil Cult in America…”, and featured stops in Clearwater, Los Angeles — and, more unusually — the Church of Spiritual Technology headquarters compound at Twin Peaks, California, where Shelly Miscavige is widely believed to live and work.
The Clearwater and LA portions followed a script that readers probably know well: cameras rolling, staff reactions, a bit of posturing. There wasn’t much there that hasn’t already been seen countless times before.
The CST segment, however, was different. Rather than filming from public areas or attempting to approach through any sort of reception, Oliveira appears to have gone over a fence and onto clearly private property. He recorded several buildings and captured footage of at least one person who didn’t seem aware she was being filmed.
At that point, whatever label one wants to apply, it stops being “journalism” or “asking questions” and becomes simple trespass. Giving Oliveira the benefit of the doubt, this may have been more a case of poor judgment than intent. Still, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if CST were to file a formal complaint — and if they did, Oliveira’s own video would likely be all the documentation required.
