Big news from Alex Barnes-Ross this morning as he is sharing with us a document from the Mid-Sussex District Council. It lays out a voluntary code of conduct for both protesters and Scientology which should head off the church’s request for a draconian legal ban on demonstrations outside its UK headquarters, Saint Hill Manor.
Scientology leader David Miscavige brought back after a hiatus for the pandemic a yearly autumn event to Saint Hill in 2023, and it was greeted by a demonstration organized by Barnes-Ross, a former London Scientology staffer. As a result, Scientology asked the council for a “PSPO,” an ordinance that would make protesting in that area illegal.
After closely observing Alex’s 2024 protest and communicating with both sides, the council asked if, short of passing a law, the two sides could agree to a code of conduct. Alex shared the proposed rules with us here at the Bunker, and got a lot of advice from our readers that he should push back on some of the restrictions the council was proposing.
He did, and the result was a much improved proposal that was more respectful for protester rights. And now, Alex is sharing with us the latest letter from the council which announces that agreement has been reached over the proposal and that it will go to the council for a vote.
