Thursday night the city council of Clearwater, Florida voted 3-2 to remove the right-of-way from a block-long downtown street, South Garden Avenue, so that it can eventually be taken over by the Church of Scientology as part of its project to build L. Ron Hubbard Hall and L. Ron Hubbard Park, the final pieces of its Vatican City, what it calls its “spiritual Mecca.”
Several times during Thursday night’s meeting, it was pointed out that this “vacation” of the public’s right to Garden Avenue is not actually necessary for Scientology’s plans. Even when the Hall and the Park are built, the street could remain public and the church could simply get permits to shut it down when it has events.
That was, in fact, Scientology’s own original plan. But over time, church leader David Miscavige became determined to get control of that short public road.
How determined? One indication of it was the large number of Scientologists who showed up at the initial vote two weeks ago and then on Thursday, packing the council hearing room at the public library, even though the vote really wasn’t in doubt.
And now, another indication: Public posts by Scientologists show just how they celebrated the win Thursday night, with the surprising detail that the celebration included Miscavige himself.
