We’re continuing to go through leaked documents from Scientology’s secret police and spy corps, the Office of Special Affairs (OSA), which also deals with public relations emergencies that church leader David Miscavige obsesses over.
In this case, a couple of reports written to Miscavige in 2005 give us some new behind-the-scenes glimpses of how much OSA and Miscavige were freaking out about the feud that developed that year between actors Tom Cruise, Scientology’s most famous celebrity, and Brooke Shields.
To set up the documents, let’s remember how that feud developed.
On May 4, 2005, Shields gave Oprah Winfrey an interview that got a lot of attention because she admitted to suffering from severe postpartum depression and had been suicidal. She credited the antidepressant Paxil with helping her get through it.
On May 23 in an Access Hollywood interview with Billy Bush, Tom Cruise criticized Shields for relying on prescription drugs to get through her depression, advancing the Scientology anti-psychiatry line by suggesting that she would have been better off handling her condition with vitamins and exercise. (That same day, May 23, Tom memorably jumped on Winfrey’s couch, extolling his passion for his new girlfriend, Katie Holmes.)
