[David Miscavige changes his mind about banning protests at Saint Hill]
For nearly a year, the Mid Sussex District Council has been considering very carefully a petition by the Church of Scientology to put a legal ban on protesting known as a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) outside the gates of its UK Headquarters in East Grinstead, England.
Now, just days before the council is set to vote on the proposal — and after the council’s staff recommended that the ban be denied after getting both Scientology and protesters to agree to codes of conduct instead — Scientology has withdrawn its petition.
Too late, says former Scientology London staffer Alex Barnes-Ross, who organized protests outside Saint Hill at the last two IAS galas in 2023 and 2024. The item is already on the agenda and the council will consider it, he says, even with Scientology’s last-minute withdrawal.
We are reminded, of course, of a similar situation that occurred just last month in Clearwater, Florida, another major Scientology headquarters. In that instance, Scientology had petitioned to purchase a street as part of its grand downtown project involving the future L. Ron Hubbard Hall. But after a city councilman changed his stance and the petition was heading to defeat, the morning of the scheduled vote Scientology withdrew its petition for the street rather than suffer the embarrassing loss.
In that case, the council pulled the item off of its agenda and no vote occurred.
