Linkin Park's Emily Armstrong expresses a very Scientology-like sentiment

Last September, it was a big story that lasted several days: Linkin Park revealed that it was reforming after a seven-year hiatus following the death of singer Chester Bennington, and were getting back on the road by hiring Dead Sara singer Emily Armstrong, a Scientologist.

Not only did Armstrong have a history as a Scientologist, but in 2020 she showed up to support Scientology celebrity Danny Masterson at his criminal arraignment, three years before Masterson was convicted and sentenced to 30 years to life in prison. Armstrong put out a statement saying she regretted showing up to support Masterson that day, and that she never spoke to him again. The word “Scientology” did not appear in her statement.

Here at the Bunker, we contributed to the story by talking to Mike Rinder, who at one time had been a prisoner in Scientology’s notorious “The Hole” prison along with Emily’s mother Gail Armstrong, a fellow “Sea Org” executive. Years later, Gail contributed to a campaign to smear Mike after he left the church. In other words, there was just no question that Emily Armstrong had been brought up not only in Scientology, but that her mother was still part of its inner hardcore.

And there was another reason why some were highly critical of the move by Linkin Park to hire her. Bennington had struggled with his mental health and ultimately ended his own life. Replacing him with a Scientologist seemed particularly bad form: Scientology hates the mental health professions with a white-hot passion. Even after they leave Scientology, former members have been so indoctrinated to hate psychiatry that they find it extremely difficult to get therapy for the struggles of leaving such a mind-warping group.

She does this flipping off thing all the time to everything. I think this time, considering her past and the questions around her, it was in bad taste. I have to admit it is a little concerning to me, but I don't think it means anything.

She has spoken positively about therapy and I don't think she's talking about auditing, but that's just my opinion.

I think (hope) this is nothing and not a sign that she's still in the grasp of Scientology.
