Jehovah’s Witnesses

Mike and Leah discuss the similarities between scientology and the JW's and how the JW's have grown more scientology-like in their Fair Game-style attacks on those who expose their abuses.

I remember seeing JWs at a Metrolink train station trying to recruit people many years ago.
(IIRC, this only happened one time that I saw.)

I've written on the old board about my experience with the local JWs. The lady who knocked on my door, Irene, had a trick of commanding the space in front of your doorway and, after a brief greeting, asking you a question about God or Christianity, as though she had all the right in the world to be there and take up your time.

For a while I was willing to play along (as people have noticed, I like arguing and debating issues). but I eventually tired of her as it became apparent that this was a waste of time and it wasn't a genuine discussion, and she wasn't going to change any of her views no matter what I said.

I was finally rude to her, which she didn't take well; I chased after her and protested bitterly to her that I felt she'd forced me into that position. I haven't heard from her or any other JWs since; this was about ten years ago.

Occasionally she did say something interesting, such as that Christmas is one of the prime recruiting times for the JWs because so many people get fed up with the Festivities (the JWs of course don't celebrate it).

I also worked on a local history project alongside a JW called Peter who before his conversion had been a Teddy Boy in the English Midlands, and because of this was able to communicate with and earn the respect of current day gang members whom other JWs couldn't.

I'm extremely polite to J.W's (occasional) and LDS (extremely rare) that I may find on my apartment porch.

Having been raised in Fun-DUH-Mentalist Calvinist Christianity, I do know the proper manner and speech. When I say, "God Bless You!" I truly mean it, always. That's important.

Anyway, I tell all these folks the same thing that none of them seem to know how to process. "I appreciate your concern, but God and I are best buddies already." Then I politely send them off with a heartfelt blessing.
