During last week’s episode of the Group Therapy podcast, we discussed the upcoming opening of the Puerto Rico Ideal Org and Phil Jones mentioned he may have a friend who could go along to get some pictures for the Bunker. It reminded me of something that happened 15 years ago while I was on staff at the Church of Scientology London.
My Great Uncle Neill was quite possibly one of the smartest men I’ve ever met. He’d travelled the world and experienced everything life has to offer; coupled with a passion for academia and a well-above-average IQ, he was the sort of person who would challenge you intellectually in a way I find it hard to put into words. It was impossible to walk away from a conversation with him without questioning everything you thought you knew - in the best possible way. Although British, he lived in Puerto Rico and when I was a teenager he took an active interest in my studies, regularly sending me messages asking how I was progressing at school and offering me general life advice.
But he took issue with my growing interest in Scientology and there was no beating around the bush when it came to Uncle Neill voicing his concerns.
With Phil’s mention of Puerto Rico, I decided to scroll back and find a conversation I’d had with Neill back in 2011 and reading it with the fresh perspective of an ex-Scientologist, it broke my heart.
