It struck us, watching Scientologists show up to speak to Clearwater, Florida’s city council last week in favor of a downtown street being “vacated” outside what will become the L. Ron Hubbard Hall project, that we were seeing something rather unusual from these Hubbard fans.
One after the other, they told the council that they had moved to Clearwater in order to be near “Flag,” which they said was their religion’s “spiritual headquarters.” It was really pretty remarkable. We’ve rarely seen them say such things in a public setting like that.
The council members themselves were very careful not to discuss what it was that Scientology is actually doing in their town. They were on notice from Florida’s Attorney General James Uthmeier not to use “discriminatory” language when it came to this request for a vacated road.
But we wondered, more than 50 years after Scientology surreptitiously began to take over this gulf coast town on orders from Hubbard (1911-1986), were locals and their political representatives still unclear on what this controlling and secretive organization was using the town for?
Scientologists have another way of describing “Flag,” short for “Flag Land Base,” that takes up much of Clearwater’s downtown. They call it the “mecca for technical perfection.” Because what they do there, they tell each other, is technical and science, not religion.
Oh sure, it’s the “church” of Scientology to outsiders, and they laid on the religious language for the council, but what Scientologists actually believe is that Hubbard, a 1930s pulp fiction hack, had somehow discovered the true nature of the universe through scientific means.
