L. Ron Hubbard’s life changed forever when he published Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health on May 9, 1950. It kickstarted what would eventually become the Scientology movement, which has now outlived him by 39 years.
As Dianetics nears its 75th anniversary next week, the current Church of Scientology, which has struggled to maintain membership in a time of terrible publicity and endless litigation, is apparently trying to make a good show of things.
“I saw a big signup poster in the reception area of London Org advertising the 75th anniversary of Dianetics,” former London staffer Alex Barnes-Ross tells us. “They're running a worldwide Book-a-thon from 1 to 8 May, so it’s likely we'll see more people out on the streets flogging Dianetics.”
And if anyone knows a thing or two about selling books for Scientology, it’s Alex, whose job at the London org was putting together this kind of public push.
“I can imagine there will be a lot of pressure internally on making this the biggest Book-a-thon ever, due to the milestone anniversary. So Div 6 staff will be hard at work recruiting public from the course rooms to join them on the streets to offer stress tests,” he says.
He predicted that in the last few days before the start of the effort, staffers at orgs around the world were busy drilling each other on how to sell the book to a wary public.
