Are you stupid about things but yet give your opinion?

Why do people get into anything? There are people who straight up joined the FLDS who weren’t even brought up in it.

you point to something i realized just recently has been overlooked in recent discussions.

there's a whole class of people for whom their getting involved in scientology obviously had absolutely nothing to do with rhetoric: those born into it. and when they stay in it into adulthood that may also have nothing to do with rhetoric, but rather with social factors, and various complexities that might just be called 'inertia'.

so isn't it likely then that there are people who chose to join scientology as adults for those same sort of social reasons, rather than something like the appeal of rhetoric? the obvious category of people that would most likely apply to are partners and spouses of recruits.

Hubbard appropriated stuff from many other belief systems and theories. I’ve always been surprised that Scientology isn’t described more often as new age.

People I knew liked the ideas as they seemed to be a refreshing change from bible thumping.

I think you are wrong on that point of view from your outsider trying to figure it out, which is all good you know. But the truth of the matter is if a raw meat public, decided to join staff, at the mission, org, or sea org level,

they are exposed to hubbard's rhetoric. In order to be considered a staff member, one at the mission and org level have to do something called staff status's course's, these are courses that explain scientology and being a staff member thru hubbard's rhetoric, doesn't matter if one got auditing or not.

Same is true in the sea org level, except there one listens to hubbard's rhetoric of joining the sea org and being apart of the elite of the elite of the elite in scientology.

It's a weeding out thing, only allow on staff people who have fallen for hubbard's rhetoric, those that don't, let them go. These are considered PTS or SP.

Here are some things I'm stupid about and not.

Fixing a EV car. I can fix lots of things on a gas powered car.

Stupid about computer programming, not so stupid about researching on you tube about how to maybe solve the problem.

Stupid about politics in the current age, don't even want to go there.

Pretty smart about fixing things around the house. I can see how they and what the problem is.

Anyways, we are not stupid about things, and some things we are stupid about things.

they're also exposed, or subject to, love bombing and other well recognized techniques. what if it's those other things that make more of a difference, for many of not most of the people, than the rhetoric?

people who go to prison are subject to rhetoric during the intake procedure. that's not the reason they go to prison.

and, i wasn't talking about people joining staff, just becoming members -- or just being born in. can you address those examples, that don't seem to fit at all into your theory about rhetoric?

of course it does, being born in to a scientology husband and wife family, you are constantly exposed to hubbard's rhetoric. The only hypnosis is rhetoric, think about it.

I might add love bombing is about emotional appeal, duh.

Should I add all the other appeals, the emeter was a logical logos appeal, status of moving up bridge was a pathos appeal. Getting thru the wall of fire was all 3 appeals, etc. I could go on forever. with examples.

If you are commenting to me, I'm only trying to explain the truth.

Imagining one has The Truth that others just can't or won't see or agree with is the core sickness of cult Scientology and pretty much any other toxic group like the Rapture Cultists, any Truther group, Communists, pseudo-scientific Deprogrammers, etc.

you'd also be exposed to pictures of LRH -- and maybe even recordings of him singing! it doesn't necessarily mean that any one of those factors is necessarily why someone who grows up in scientology, ends up being involved or at least being a member.

I might add love bombing is about emotional appeal, duh.

according to the formal definition, not necessarily in the sense of rhetoric. love bombing can even be non-verbal -- think for instance of the Children of God's 'flirty fishing'.[/QUOTE]

So, you are Founder of Rhetorology? ("Where everything is rhetoric and that's the truth")

A rhetorical question?
.

LOL. Two funny posts!

Those posts inspired the discovery of a curious paradox:

THE RHETORICAL PARADOX
If everything is inherently untrustworthy "rhetoric", then
aren't the experts lecturing everyone on rhetoric and the
definition of rhetoric itself—likewise untrustworthy rhetoric?

no Bill, you ought to expand your knowledge of philosophy. I'm just saying that was hubbard used. And he also used the sublime (going clear and then OT) which many modern-day writers, blog posters, politicians', etc. use along with rhetoric about anything.

I don't have a clue about any other culture, I can only speak of the culture of dianetics and scientology.

You should look up the definition of "pretentious".

so why give your opinion in the first place if you don't know enough about it?
Opinions can matter. They are not all bad or all good, but they are all important. The best thing you can do is to verify the opinion yourself, not demand proof of an opinion. All Supreme Court decisions are opinion. Do people demand the Supreme Court to prove its opinion? Mostly no.
