Scientology leader David Miscavige is going to have a lot to boast about at the IAS gala this fall. His captive audience will hear about the new Ideal Org in South Africa, the three new L. Ron Hubbard shrines in New Jersey, Arizona, and Zimbabwe. He’ll also no doubt brag about the Dianetics 75th Anniversary party he threw in May.
And he’s also quietly been opening some new “Ideal Missions” that we didn’t want to ignore.
At one time, the mission network was the backbone of Scientology. Independently owned and operated, they were where people often first encountered Scientology in the 1970s and were busy and profitable. Missions offered introductory courses and funneled new members on to the orgs and then to the advanced orgs where Scientologists were turned into super beings.
But under David Miscavige, who took over after Hubbard died in 1986, the mission network began to fade away. Underground Bunker reader Pan, for example, has documented how the missions list has dwindled compared to the list of them from an earlier era.
But quietly, Miscavige has been injecting some new life into the network by having some of the still-existing missions go “Ideal.”
