Scientology’s annual celebration of its biggest donors — the Patrons Ball at the annual IAS gala held in England in autumn — is not very far off. That’s when we look forward to seeing those donors get their big trophies for moving up in “status,” which is another way of saying that church leader David Miscavige got them to fork over more cash.
At other times of the year, Miscavige runs additional Patrons Balls at similar events, or in some cases simply has Impact magazine publish a tribute to these generous givers.
And that’s the case this week, as a new set of photographs showed up in a new issue of Impact, even though no event seems to have been held.
The donors are photographed in casual settings, with no trophies in sight. What’s Miscavige up to? Well, for whatever reason this new set of photos showed up, we’re always interested in who is keeping Scientology afloat with their big donations.
For our newer readers, this is what we’re going on about: All Scientologists are under intense pressure to donate huge sums for a variety of different projects and in a variety of different ways. But one of the most important ways to contribute is by donating to what started out as a defense fund for the church in 1984, the International Association of Scientologists.
Donors are recognized who have, in recent months, reached a new cumulative goal in their total overall spending. This is called a “status,” and they have fancy names. Donate $500,000 overall to the IAS, for example, and you are given the fancy status “Silver Meritorious.” It’s like a game for rich people, who try to give enough to get to the next level.
