Excerpt:

Jefferson Hawkins was one of the most thoughtful and courageous voices to ever come out of Scientology. He stood up to David Miscavige and the organization at great personal cost, choosing integrity over fear. In interviews and in his writing, Jefferson had a rare ability to describe not just what happened inside Scientology, but how it worked—how the madness at the top filtered downward, and how the system L. Ron Hubbard created functioned as a powerful machine of mind control, reshaping the way people think while convincing them they were doing the opposite.

While I didn’t know Jefferson personally, I deeply admired him. I understood the courage it takes to expose abuse in an organization designed to punish dissent, and I was struck by the intelligence, warmth, and clarity he brought to every conversation. His books and media appearances had a profound impact on how I think about autonomy, critical thinking, and what it truly means to think for oneself—especially when that very phrase is twisted into an Orwellian trap, used to impose blinders rather than remove them. Jefferson Hawkins helped people see past those blinders, and his voice continues to matter.

When I took a cross country tour to interview as many people as I could on their Scientology experiences back in 2011, he was someone I needed to meet. He was as gracious as he was wise and I’m glad I had a chance to spend some time with the man I had admired from afar. Here is that interview.

As opposed to what it was like to be around Hubbard before then, which was like being stuck in an elevator with your PMSing x-wife and her big brother.
