Flight tracker software shows that Tom Cruise’s helicopter made the short flight from outside London to East Grinstead, England yesterday, indicating that once again he will be on hand for this year’s big Scientology annual event there, the IAS anniversary gala.

The International Association of Scientologists is Scientology’s membership organization, founded in 1984, and its gala is a three-day affair that starts tonight, typically with a three-hour speech by leader David Miscavige. A couple of thousand people will be on hand inside a giant tent erected on the grounds of Scientology’s UK headquarters at Saint Hill Manor.

On the second night, tomorrow, the rows of chairs in the tent will give way to banquet tables, as the Patrons Ball is held, requiring the purchase of a pricy ticket to attend. But this is the best chance that Scientologists have to see Cruise, who will be seated at a table in the middle of the room, and with a railing around it to keep out the hoi polloi. It’s at the Patrons Ball when the church’s big donors receive their trophies for moving up in “status” over the last twelve months.

Before they can go into the grounds at Saint Hill, however, Scientology’s wealthy patrons will have to drive by former London staffer Alex Barnes-Ross and his annual protest. Alex tells us he has some surprises in store this year, and we are looking forward to catching up with him later this evening as we record tomorrow’s Group Therapy podcast.

Three hour speech?

My god, Hubbard could send me to sleep in ten minutes.... Boring old twit that he was.

What the hell could Miscavige blather on about for three hours? Especially without repeating himself.
