To what degree is the e-meter responding to actual mental phenomena?

Only an incompetent auditor with total fail levels of training on the TRs (TR-0 in particular) and the E-Meter Drills can be deceived that way. Of course, that certainly applies to all almost current Org HCO staff doing "meter checks" or "HCO Confessionals".

They're so OT at Flag that they don't need e-meters in HCO. They just grab a heap of stuff out of your folder and yell it at you angrily.

Yes, exactly. Under David "Darth Midget" Miscavige, they are are now the Church of Reverse Processing. >:(

You mention HDC which would be the Hubbard Dianetics Course. Above I called it the Dianetic Auditor Course but that was a guess and I believe you are correct.

Course was called Hubbard Standard Dianetics Course (HSDC) and the qualification is Hubbard Dianetics Counsellor (HDC).

My point was actually referring to things like sec checks where some people actually knew how to bypass certain things just to get through the day, if you get my meaning. Some people in the cult actually knew what they would be in for if they got a reading, so they figured out how to work things in their favour. Smarter options.

Some people absolutely knew how to lie without getting a read. Some people could get a F/N at the drop of a hat no matter what. Some people would get reads all the time and random places that were of no help in the interrogation.

Some people would pretty much remain 'flat' all the darn time and never give a read on anything, even if when were telling you that they have 6 arms and are the ping-pong champion of the kingdom of Brunei.

In short: The meter is an extremely imprecise and fallible tool. At its very best it can act as a minor help to the investigator, but even the final decision still needs to be taken based on other evidence for it to be a good one.

So my review of the Hubbard E-meter is: 1 out of Five stars, "Buy it only for your mother in law and only if you really hate her".

I was a Class V auditor and C/S. I'll never forget the time a young woman had been recruited for staff, straight off the street, and I had to give her some kind of sec check to see if she would be a suitable recruit.

I asked all kinds of questions about crimes, ethics situations, and anything that could disqualify her. She F/Nd through the whole list - blond hair, blue eyes, smiling sweetly. I suspected something was wrong so after the session I sat chatting to her. She told me that she and her friends liked to steal cars and go for joyrides. She knew how to hotwire a car. She wasn't qualified to drive but she had stolen her sister's licence and would show that to cops if she was stopped. She told me all this in a very chatty way as if it was all completely normal.

It probably was completely normal for her. That's why she floated.
I met someone like that. A total sweetheart. Then I learn that in her family it's normal to lie about anything and everything, like breathing.
I ended that date early.

Yep, sounds familiar. Some people won't read if they don't consider some action bad or worth mentioning. Then they don't feel any anxiety so no read.

Psychopaths don't feel any anxiety in general, so they don't generate reads even if you play them a tape of a CCTV recording of them doing it, they can just flat out lie to your face: "That wasn't me, that recording is doctored" and the meter won't indicate that it is a lie.

Another bs meter confusing trick:

If you bite your cheek or tongue, it will appear as a read. You can use it to your advantage and create a sea of reads to hide the real withold.
