I wonder if any of us who became so committed to Scientology didn't feel irretrievably enslaved and held in that trap, and worked hard to override and push back that dismal feeling..

I wasn't there when Astra was a little kid. But I was living there when her younger sister Zoe arrived. And I can vouch that every single thing Zoe said in that interview about living in the Anthony Building is 100% true and legit.

Addendum: I should have made it more clear in my previous post (as well as that one) that I have NOT lived at the Mace-Kingsley ranch.
I lived in the Anthony Building in LA. That's where me, my sister, Astra's sister Zoe, Conrad and a bunch of other kids lived. I *think* Astra also lived there as a little kid for a time, but that was before my time there. Keep in mind Astra is several years older than me or Zoe, so she was already in the SO when me and Zoe were kids in the AB.
That's another thing to keep in mind: None of us kids had adult relatives or other guardians living with us. Zoe was alone, her sister Astra was in the SO and her mom was nowhere to be found. Me and my sis were alone, our mother was on a different continent at the time and we had no other family members in scientology. Conrad was alone, his parents were in Germany and Denmark respectively.
And that is actually one of the major reason why abusive assholes like Wally or Chris got away with the stuff they did. Because there was literally nobody else around to stop them. Nobody really cared to check up on us if we were doing ok. We didn't have cellphones, none of us could call our parents or anyone else.
I've been through various crazy stuff, years in the SO including periods of sleep deprivatin when we slept no more than 2-4 hours per night for months. That was bad, but it doesn't beat the AB. Living as a kid in the AB was the single worst memory I have of all my time in the CoS.
