The Lost Children of Scientology — Jamie Mustard Interview on Soft White Underbelly

Soft White Underbelly is a great podcast.

That said, are there ANY pro-Scientology non-official books at all?
Can't think of any.

there once were about things related to the 'subject', when members had some freedom to write and publish -- like the popular Ruth Minshull.

that was of course cracked down on, but i remember something in recent years about one or more members who were self-publishing some stuff that seemed to dovetail with OSA PR, with it not being clear if they were being tolerated because is suited the CoS or were just pretending to be doing it on their own. i can't remember names but i expect that someone here would....

Soft White Underbelly’s Mark Laita interviews Jamie Mustard on Jamie’s hellish experience being born into Scientology’s Sea Org.
Jamie Mustard’s book Child X: A Memoir of Slavery, Poverty, Celebrity, and Scientology releases on July 29, 2025 and is available for preorder on Amazon.

Brutal!

But I watched it all, once again soaking in the blithe evil that lurks under Scientology's shiny nano-thin patina.

Hard to describe what he experienced, but I'll try. An inspirational nightmare.

Congrats Jamie Mustard!

All those non-LRH books stopped in 1982 during the purges.

I remember that Ruth;s books were very sought after in the independent field, especially "How To Choose Your People". Miscavige's decision to stop promoting her was a major footbullet.

except for all the ones that weren't actually written by LRH, but nonetheless were branded as if he had written them :)

and i wish i could remember the name of at least one guy who's come up as writing stuff in recent years. but from what i remember sales on Amazon were in the dozens or at best hundreds of books -- it may even have been an OSA or OSA tolerated attempt to have titles on Amazon countering all the critical material, though it doesn't look like they are manage to 'out create' all that well:

actually, i don't know if it's the author i'm thinking of, but I did find this curious book that's apparently new in the last year:

It's flying off the shelves over on Amazon!!

Quite apparently, the publisher of this wonderfully informative book are so crazed trying to keep up with the flood of orders and the daunting task of trying to do fulfillment, they have not had any time to post all the glowing reviews!

In fact, they haven't yet posted any reviews for the $14.99 bestseller.

I haven't read the book yet, but i can state with total certainty that I have had huge life-changing wins

@Sneakster

I am baffled that you do not rejoice at the effectiveness of Jamie's book.
Simon and Schuster are "NOT* stupid morons.
Jamie was vetted thoroughly and their fact checkers checked extensively as they cautiously review every biography.
And Simon and Schuster are all too familiar with OSA tactics which is why so many books are not accepted and authors had to self-publish.
Instead of looking at the bigger picture of Jamie's effect that he is causing on the cult..I see OSA smearing and you are referring me to REDDIT.

Reddit is swarming with OSA. It is completely infiltrated.

You are offended that you were a nanny and did not witness an incident., Good grief, do you think you witnessed
everything that happened at every child facility 24/7
?

I'm wondering how one measures the "effectiveness" of a book that the publishers aren't even shipping until July 29th (24 days from now).

Simon & Schuster is a major publisher (the 5th largest in the country) and they don't publish books if they don't believe them to be "effective".

It's not easy for an ex-Scientologist to get a book published by Simon & Schuster. The only other book they published was Mike Rinder's, which was a NY Times Bestseller.

One can read the reviews that Karen posted for the book in the other thread. Maybe you can start to measure the effectiveness in that way while you're waiting for the 29th of July. :coolwink:

There's another book expected to be published later in 2025, not listed on Amazon yet, but I was sent an advance copy. It has a picture of the famous author on the cover. (This is just the current draft of the book cover, not the final version)

Any book publishing house ultimately only cares about one thing: are they going to make substantially more from sales of a given book than it costs them to print, distribute, and sell it. They spend no more money on their legal department vetting an expose book than is required to avoid liability for publishing it.

That would be S&S's notion of effective (a term I very much doubt anyone in the pre-publication approvals process even uses): we are almost certainly going to profit from selling this book.

When it comes to Scientology, I can see why one might be filled with wonder. Because—

Since 1950, there has been a multitude of compelling evidence that Hubbard's 'humanitarian' treatment of both children and adults is paradoxically quite wonder-ful (quod erat demonstratum).

Given Scientology's litigious history, I would expect that they'll vet that book more thoroughly than is typical. :)

According to the Amazon listing for this book, the actual publisher is BenBella Books, not Simon & Schuster. (I just noticed this a moment ago)

According to ChatGPT:

BenBella Books is an independent publishing house based in Dallas, Texas, founded in 2001. While it operates independently, BenBella has a distribution partnership with Simon & Schuster. Effective January 1, 2025, Simon & Schuster began handling worldwide sales and distribution for BenBella Books, transitioning from their previous distributor, Penguin Random House Publisher Services .publishersweekly.com+2en.wikipedia.org+2benbellabooks.com+2lunch.publishersmarketplace.com+1publishersweekly.com+1

This arrangement means that Simon & Schuster manages the logistics of getting BenBella's books into bookstores and other sales channels. However, BenBella maintains its editorial independence, selecting and publishing titles under its own imprints, such as Smart Pop, Matt Holt, and BenBella Vegan .en.wikipedia.org+1simonandschuster.com+1

In summary, BenBella Books is not owned by Simon & Schuster but relies on them for distribution services.
