[Bent Corydon and David Miscavige]
We have Patty Moher to blame for this one.

She messaged us a few days ago, saying that it was going around that Scientology church leader David Miscavige had never been ordered to sit through a legal deposition. She didn’t believe that was the case, and wondered if we knew more about it.

In fact, we did.

Although it’s true today that Scientology expends enormous money and effort to keep Miscavige out of court cases so that he avoids being deposed, he did have to sit for questioning at least twice that we’re aware of in 1990s lawsuits.

Of those two, we managed to obtain a full copy of one of them, the first of Dave’s depositions, which took place in July 1990 in Bent Corydon’s lawsuit against Scientology.

Bent was a Scientology mission holder in Riverside, California who fought the church over ownership of his building after he’d become disillusioned with the organization. He fought the church for a decade, eventually winning and keeping the building in 1992.

During that lawsuit, Corydon had the unique opportunity to depose Miscavige, and his attorney, Toby Plevin, did not want to waste it. Here was the first chance ever to get Miscavige under oath and get to the bottom of how much power he wields over the entire movement through his position as captain of the Sea Org and chairman of the board of the Religious Technology Center.
